Lou Genatossio is an Industrial Designer with a unique view of industrial product design. He is painter of fine arts by education, and also a student of architecture. Lou has been designing high quality products for the Bose Corporation for many years and has been designing JACO carts for the past 5 years. Here are some of his views on product design, particularly the way JACO designs its carts:
“The first thing I did was to understand that Jaco could do things with metal that other companies can’t do. They have a virtuoso understanding of metal that makes them unique, and they manufacture it in a quality way.”
“There was a treasure chest of good ideas coming from this team. The people at this company take great pride in approaching things in the right way. They come up with the “truth” about what is the right solution for their customers, not just the right price. Jaco is different by definition because they want to do the best job possible.”
“There is a synergy that happens when the JACO team gets together. Our discussions include the company president, engineer and sales manager. They all have good ideas. And they all share the same philosophy, style, functionality and cost.”
“Instead of a sequence of events where you do a design concept then generate a mechanical design and fabricate it, Jaco designs in a very cutting edge way, we call it concurrent design. Every step of the customer using the product is is storyboarded, and combined into ergonomics, style and functionality. We often make changes as we go along. Jaco can turn on a dime to meet the needs of their customers.”
