Part of a Comprehensive Disinfection Program
Antimicrobial surfaces are commonly used in the medical industry as one step to ensure a clean environment is maintained. Many locations have implemented requirements for equipment that includes the mandatory use of antimicrobial agents in the surfaces of all equipment that may come in contact with a patient. This not only includes common medical equipment such as pumps and monitoring equipment, but also applies to beds and computer equipment.
At JACO we have implemented antimicrobial technology from several manufacturers on all of our products, including all of the medical computer carts, along with our line of wall mounted computer stations and wall arms. Silver Ion Technology was selected because of its application in powder coating, which provides many benefits over a plastic material. Silver additives slowly releases silver ions via an ion exchange mechanism to provide long term antimicrobial properties to whichever surface it is applied. The released ions interact with the microbes and render them unable to survive. This type of application ensures that the antimicrobial properties are effective throughout the entire depth of the coating, not just the surface.
Because of its resistance to scratching and chipping, powder coating is ideal for medical applications. When a plastic antimicrobial surface gets scratched or chipped, it creates microscopic areas where bacteria can grow, as it may not be in direct contact with the antimicrobial surface.
